A woman and her help were arrested for allegedly murdering three of her in-laws and burning their bodies over a property dispute in Sohna, near Gurgaon, police said. The accused reportedly told police they got ideas to commit the murders by watching crime-based TV shows. Police said Geeta Tomar had frequent disputes over the property worth ₹18 crore.

GURGAON: A woman and her domestic help have been arrested for allegedly murdering three of her in-laws and burning their bodies over a property dispute in Sohna, near Gurgaon, police said.

According to the police, 33-year-old Geeta Tomar had frequent disputes with her in-laws over their property that was reportedly worth ₹18 crore. Geeta had been demanding a share in the property since her “drug addict” husband committed suicide about six months ago.

The couple had been married for five years and have a fouryear-old daughter. Geeta used to live in the same house as her in-laws on the first floor.

Late on Thursday night, Geeta and her domestic help Vikas, 24, allegedly strangled her in-laws and burnt their bodies using petrol. Geeta had bought the petrol, rope and jute bags a day ahead, police said.

At around 10am they first strangled Geeta’s mother-in-law, Pushpa Tomar (60), and kept her body inside a washroom, the accused told police. Later, at noon, brother-in-law Pankaj Tomar (38) was murdered, and father-in-law Satpal Tomar (65), a retired army man, was killed subsequently, said inspector Ajit Singh, SHO Ramgarh police station in Alwar. The accused reportedly burnt Pankaj’s body at Nagina area of Mewat, while they attempted to burn the bodies of Satpal and Pushpa at Naugaon in Rajasthan’s Alwar district, about 100 km from Sohna.

Naugaon villagers called police on finding the half-burnt bodies on Friday morning after which a Rajasthan Police team reached Sohna on Friday.

Alwar police scanned CCTV camera recordings of toll plazas between Sohna, Alwar and Mewat and spotted a black car which was reportedly used to dispose the bodies. The car’s owner, a neighbour of the Tomar family, said Geeta had borrowed the vehicle Thursday night for an apparent “emergency”. Police have impounded the car.

“We found blood stains in the vehicle,” the SHO said.

The police have filed an FIR against Geeta and Vikas under Section 302 (murder) and Section 201 (disappearance of evidence) of the Indian Penal Code. Police said Geeta’s brother, Samardeep Chauhan, is also a suspect in the case as a relative of the victims claimed that Chauhan had unsuccessfully tried to borrow his car on the day of the murder. “Geeta and Chauhan called me to borrow the car. I turned them down. Late on Thursday, Chauhan came to my house to ask for the car again. I refused again,” said Amit Tomar, 34, a cousin of Pankaj.
