Soldier killed in sniper fire on LoC in Poonch

JAMMU: With no let up in border skirmishes, Pakistan army killed an Indian soldier in a sniper fire from across the Line of Control (LoC) in Poonch district, on Tuesday .

The deceased has been identified as naik Mahendra Chemjung of Nepal.

The sources in the army said,“The slain soldier of 7/11 Gurkha Rifles was critically injured after he was hit by a bullet from across the LoC in KG sector of Poonch. He was immediatel­y evacuated to a nearby health facility, where the doctors declared him brought dead.”

35-year- old naik Mahendra Chemjung, belonged to Chilingdin in Nepal and is survived by his wife Nayan Kala Chemjung and a son.

“Pakistan army initiated unprovoked firing on Indian Army posts in Krishna Ghati sector at around 12.50pm on Tuesday. Indian army retaliated strongly and effectivel­y. However, in the exchange of fire, naik Mahendra Chemjung was grievously injured and succumbed to his injuries,” said a defence spokesman.

Naik Mahendra Chemjung was a brave and sincere soldier, the nation will always remain indebted to him for the supreme sacrifice and devotion to duty, the spokesman added.

On Monday, two minors were killed and 12 civilians injured in cross-border shelling by Pakistan along the LoC in Poonch district.

A total of 21 cattle also died in the Pak shelling in Malti area of Digwar.

Meanwhile, Inter Services Publicity Relations (ISPR), a publicity wing of Pak Army posted on its website on October 2 said,“Indian unprovoked firing along Line of Control in Rakhchikri sector targeting civil population. The Pakistan army effectivel­y engaged Indian posts targeting civil population.”
