SRINAGAR: The group of militants who carried out an attack on a BSF camp in Srinagar on Tuesday were part of a larger group which infiltrated into Kashmir between July and August, police officials said on Tuesday.

According to the Inspector General of Police, Kashmir Range, Muneer Khan, the group was earlier involved in the attack on Police Lines in Pulwama in which 8 security personnel were killed. Three militants of a Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) squad were killed in the attack.

Intelligence agencies had warned of more attempts by JeM as many of its infiltrators were still at large.

“A big group had infiltrated. About six seven people from the group are still at large, we need to eliminate them soon,’’ Khan said.

Khan said the militants broke into the camp through a fence adjoining a residential area. “They entered Gagoo Land through Friends Colony,’’ he said. The colony, which is close to the first checking gate of the Srinagar International Airport, is a high-end residential area which houses many bureaucrats and politicians.

It opens into Gagoo which is the rear of the BSF camp.

Militants entered the camp around 4.05 am cutting through the wires and fencing.

According to officials, the first militant fell to the bullets of the security men “while they were trying to enter the camp’’.

DGP Vaid said that “three jawans including an ASI were the first to come in the line of fire’’. While three jawans are out of danger, police declared the death of the ASI at 11 am.

According to Khan the two militants who managed to come in entered two separate buildings in the camp — the administrative block and the subordinate officers mess.

“Five people have been evacuated from SO (officers) Mess where the second terrorist was neutralised and one person from the administrative block where the third terrorist is holed up,’’ SP Vaid, the Jammu and Kashmir director general of police, earlier said confirming the death of the second militant. The second militant was killed between 10 and 10.30 am on Tuesday . The last one was killed around 2 pm.
