Sunil Jakhar flays Modi govt for ‘fooling’ farmers
GURDASPUR: Addressing meetings in Gurdaspur, here on Thursday, Punjab Congress president and nominee Sunil Jakhar said that the Modi government had ruined the country’s agrarian economy with its anti-farmer policies.
The Modi government imposed GST on tractors and flour, without even consulting farmers, who are burdened by farm loans, said Jakhar.
Jakhar said, “I can understand the farmers’ plight. They are being cheated by the central government, which is only promoting the welfare of corporate houses.” He wondered how Badal, also a farmer, failed to understand their problems and did not take up the issue with the Modi government.
In a reference to Sucha Singh Langah, charged by the police in a rape case, Jakhar said that some people were insulting Panth with their actions. Meanwhile, radical outfit Shiv Sena (Hind) has declared unconditional support to Jakhar for the upcoming bypoll. Shiv Sena (Hind) president Nishant Sharma met Jakhar’s election campaign in-charge Captain Sandeep Sandhu and Gurdaspur MLA Barindermeet Singh Pahra at the Congress election office for the same.
PUNJAB CONG URGES EC TO CANCEL SALARIA’S CANDIDATURE
CHANDIGARH: The Punjab Congress on Thursday urged the election commission to cancel the candidature of BJP’s Swaran Salaria for the Gurdaspur bypoll for “concealing” information about a rape case filed against him in Mumbai. A Congress delegation, led by party spokesman Gurpartap Singh Mann, submitted a representation to the Punjab chief electoral officer seeking disqualification of Salaria’s candidature as he failed to inform the polling body about the case.
In the representation, the Congress claimed that the case was filed against Salaria on the complaint of a woman in 2014. Mann said, the next date of hearing in the case is October 30.
“Salaria deliberately concealed the facts in his affidavit that no FIR/chargesheet is pending against him,” he said.
