Cops ‘thrash’ elderly man to death in public

TARN TARAN: A 60-year-old man died after allegedly being thrashed by police in public, here on Thursday.

Though, the Tarn Taran police have booked six persons, including an inspector of CIA (Crime Investigat­ion Agency) staff and two cops, on the charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder in this regard.

The accused are still absconding.

The victim has been identified as Dilbagh Singh, of Bughe village, 5km from the district headquarte­rs.

The accused have been identified as inspector Bhupinder Singh of Crime Investigat­ion Agency team, constable Hawinder Singh and constable Sukhdev Singh, postman Sonu of Deep Avenue, Satnam Singh and Baljinder Singh of Bughe village.

In his complaint, the deceased’ s son, Harpal Singh,35, said, “My father, Dilbagh Singh, went to the market here for some work.”

“Some time later, I received a call informing that he was admitted to Tarn Taran civil hospital due to heart-attack,” added the deceased’s son.

collected, the victim and postman Sonu were involved in a land dispute.

“On reaching the hospital, I found my father dead,” he said.

He alleged that the accused waylaid his father in Tarn Taran and thrashed him in public, as told to him by the people present on the site.

As per informatio­n, the victim was rushed to the hospital by a passerby, where he was declared dead.

Investigat­ion officer, station house officer (SHO) Harit Sharma said, as per complainan­t Harpal Singh’s statement, the police have booked inspector Bhupinder Singh, constable Hawinder Singh, constable Sukhdev Singh, postman Sonu, Satnam Singh and Baljinder Singh under Sections 304 (punishment for culpable homicide not amounting to murder), 148 (rioting, armed with deadly weapon), 120 (punishment of criminal conspiracy) and 506 (punishment for criminal intimidati­on) of the Indian Penal Code.
