JALANDHAR:A local court on Tuesday awarded life imprisonment to gangster Daljit Singh Bhana, who was a close associate of slain gangster Sukha Kahlwan, and his two aides in a case of double murder of February 26, 2014, when six members of the gang allegedly opened fire at three young men, killing two, outside a gym in Tara Singh Avenue.

Bhana, who is a resident of Mithu Basti, Satish Gill of Baba Banda Bahadur Nagar, and Ranbir, Balbir Singh Cheema and Dalbir Singh Dalbira of Raj Nagar were produced in the court of an additional district and sessions judge. While Bhana, Satish and Ranbir got life imprisonment, Balbir and Dalbir were acquitted by the court.

For the murder of Simranjeet (23) and Deepansh (19), their friend Randeep (20), who was injured and remained in hospital for months, was the eyewitness. Deepansh’s mother, Ashu, said she would appeal to the high court for harsher punishment.

When the accused were presented in court, high security was set up and the road outside closed for public traffic as there were fears that rivals of the gangsters may strike.

Before his arrest in March 2015 by the Patiala police, Bhana was avoiding arrest for 11 years since his first case registered on August 10, 2004, at Jalandhar for attack on a woman.

Bhana, accused in three murders and three attempt-to-murder cases in Jalandhar alone, had visited Dubai, Bangkok, Brunei, Nepal and other places on a fake passport and forged documents.

The gang allegedly murdered a man named Prince Vig on May 8, 2012. It targeted the youths — for whose murder the life term was awarded — for assisting an eyewitness in that case.
