KARNAL : The brother-in-law of Haryana folk singer Harshita Dahiya, 22, who was shot dead on October 17 (Tuesday), has confessed to his involvement in the murder during interrogation, the police say.

Dinesh Kumar, who was brought on the production warrant from Jhajjar jail, by the Panipat police for interrogation has told the police that he hired three-four people for the murder of Harshita. On Wednesday, Harshita’s sister Lata had accused her estranged husband of murdering Harshita.

“Yes, Kumar has admitted that he contacted three people to kill Harshita as she was main witness in two cases registered against him,” Panipat Superintendent of Police Rahul Sharma told Hindustan Times. Harshita had accused Kumar of raping her in 2013, and a case was registered against him.

He was also booked for murdering her mother in Delhi in 2014. Harshita was the main witness in the case.

However, the SP did not disclose the names of the people involved in the murder and said that police had launched a hunt for them.

The SP added that Kumar, who was in Jhajjar jail in rape and murder case, has confessed that he hatched the conspiracy to get her killed from the jail, with the help of people who went to meet him during his hearing in the courts.

Panipat police brought him on production warrant. A local court sent in police remand on Thursday and investigation was still on.

ACCUSED KUMAR IS A GANGSTER: POLICE

Police claim that Kumar, a resident of Karala village in Delhi, is a gangster and is involved in several cases of murders, attempt to murder, loot, robbery and dacoity in Delhi and Haryana, besides a rape case.

Police had filed an application for production warrant of Kumar, after his wife and Harshita’s elder sister Lata Dahiya accused him of killing her sister when she came to Panipat to take her body.

Lata had also alleged that Dinesh had threatened Harshita and her mother not to testify against him in the rape case but they went to court and was arrested.

Later, he was also accused of killing her mother and now Harshita was only witness in both the cases.

She had also claimed that for the past six months, Dinesh and his henchmen had been threatening her of dire consequences, if she recorded her statement against him in court in murder and rape cases.

Harshita had recorded a live video on Facebook on October 12 accusing some people of threatening her of ‘outraging her modesty’.

She said on YouTube that she will also share the name and number of the person issuing the threats on Facebook and file a complaint about the death threats.

It is not clear whether she did file a police complaint.

Harshita was on her way back after performing in Chamrara village in the district on Tuesday when two men stopped her vehicle and pumped six bullets into her neck and forehead. She died on the spot, according to the police.
