YAMUNANAGAR: It was a tragic Diwali for the family of Amarjit Singh in Gobindpuri colony of the Yamunanagar city on Thursday with his 8-year-old son, Jatin, a Class-3 student, being murdered, allegedly by his uncle.

The motive for the ghastly act remains unclear, but police suspect the accused Rahul Kumar, 25, was suffering from a mental illness. Kumar, who works at a private steel factory in the city, is married and lived in the same house as Jatin and his family. The accused chopped off the head of the boy with a knife and he even mutilated the body with an iron rod, before fleeing.

FATHER SPOTTED BODY

Jatin’s father spotted the body on the first floor of their house after returning from Diwali celebrations with other members of their family on Thursday evening.

However, the police said that reason for the murder could not be ascertained yet and the body has been sent for the postmortem.

Talking to Hindustan Times, Yamunanagar city police station incharge Sunil Kumar said the police had arrested the accused after complaint by the family members of the deceased.

The accused Rahul was taken on police remand for two days and his interrogation was on to find out the reason behind the murder.

The police said that Rahul, who is also married, appears a patient of mental illness.

He has been booked under Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code.
