18 fire incidents, two dozen shops gutted in Jalandhar

JALANDHAR: At least 18 fire mishaps were reported from different parts of the city on Diwali night. In most of the incidents, firecracke­rs were believed to be the cause of the mishaps.

One of the major fire incidents occurred at Sudama Market near Jyoti Chowk in which over a two dozen shops were gutted. However, there was no report of any casualty.

Priest Vinod Kumar Mishra, who lives near the market, noticed the fire at around 9 pm on Thursday and called up the fire brigade.

The impact of the fire was such that it engulfed the shops within no time, he said.

It took 20 fire tenders and four hours to douse the flames.

The people belonging to nearby areas and local police helped the firefighte­rs to control the fire.

President market associatio­n Balwant Singh suspected foul play and demanded compensati­on from the government.

Also fire incidents occurred at Kunj Vihar, Defence Colony, Jungle Restaurant in Model Town, Surgical Complex, Gautam Naga, Ladowali Road, Kot Ram Dass Mohalla, Bohar Wala Chowk, Night Shelter in GTB Nagar, Malka Chowk, Mandi road, Basti Nau and Basti Shiekh road.

On Friday morning, a fire broke out in scrap godown situated on the 120-Feet road near Dilbagh Nagar but was controlled by three fire tenders.

Sub-fire officer Rajinder Sharma said the fire at Sudama market was controlled within four hours.

He also said that there was no casualty due to the fire mishaps.

As many as 20 vehicles (case properties) were gutted in fire on Diwali morning at Maqsudan police station. The vehicles were seized by police.
