Woman dies after delivery, hospital nurses accused of demanding ‘badhai’
ROHTAK: A woman died at the Sonepat civil hospital on Thursday, less than 24 hours after giving birth to a baby boy, allegedly due to the negligence of hospital’s staff nurses who were refused the congratulatory tip (badhai) by the woman’s family.
The woman, Meenakshi Devi, a resident of Sonepat’s Ram Nagar Colony, delivered her second child on Wednesday noon. The family said it was a normal delivery and she gave birth to a boy.
“The nurses did not bother to check on her after her delivery. They did not clean the blood. All the nurses demanded ₹1,100 badhaieachfromus. We gave₹800to one nurse and ₹100 and ₹150 to the others. This irked them and they did not check on my daughter- in- law,” said Balwant, the woman’s father-in-law. This is not the first time that Civil Hospital nurses have been accused of negligence after not getting required amount of badhai.
In September, the nurses were accused of separating a mother from her newborn for around two hours when they were not given the congratulatory tip. The hospital had transferred the nurse after conducting an inquiry.
Dr CP Arora, principal medical officer of the hospital, said nurses have denied allegation of asking for badhai in verbal interaction with him, though a detailed inquiry has been ordered. “The woman suffered bleeding after delivery. So, we transfused blood. The post-mortem has not found an exact cause ofdeath, soitseems some cardiac arrest. We have constituted a board for detailed inquiry in her death and appropriate action will be taken if negligence is found,” he said.
The family has also given a written complaint to police for FIR. However, Sonepat civil lines police station SHO said they will act after medical board's report. The Haryana government had issued strict instructions on banning badhai after the September incident at the same hospital.
