BSF jawan dies in Pak sniper fire
JAMMU: A BSF jawan was killed after Pakistan Rangers attacked a BSF patrol party along the 198 km long India-Pakistan International Border (IB) in Samba sector on Thursday morning.
“Pak Rangers’ unwarranted and dastardly act prompted the BSF to retaliate stringent ly and at least two of their Rangers have suffered serious injuries in our retaliatory fire. Wetargeted their Pir Bunker, Sukamal and two other posts ,” a senior B SF officer told HT. The deceasedjawan has been identified as constable Tapan Mondal, 25. He is survived by his mother Sumitra Mondal.
The officer said that at about 9:30 am on Thursday, Pak Rangers attacked a zero line patrol party of the BSF with a burst of sniper fire.
Though the jawan was wearing a bullet proof jacket and other protective gears, a bullet pierced con stable Tap an Mon dal’ s shoulder and ruptured his heart, he said.
The incident happened near BSF’s Manguchak post being manned by 173 battalion.
“With extreme caution, we evacuated our patrol party and then around 10:30 am, we retaliated to their unwarranted act,” said the officer. Samba DC Sheet al Nanda said, though the situation since 4 pm remains normal but we have shut all the educational institutions within a five km radius of the border. Another Army jaw an was killed during an encounter that broke out on Thursday between militants and security forces in Pulwama district of south Kashmir, police said.
