Xi Jinping re-elected general secretary, stresses plan to guide China through the ‘Two Centenary Goals’ and beyond

“Not only must we deliver the first centenary goal, we must also embark on the journey toward the second centenary goal.”

The Two Centenary Goals refer to the strategic targets of building a moderately prosperous society in all respects by 2020, the centenary of the CPC, and building a modern socialist country by the centenary of the founding of the People’ s Republic of China in 2049.

Mr Xi said next year will mark the 40th anniversar­y of the launch of reform and openingup, and he vowed to strive to comprehens­ively deep en reform and open further to the world.

In the following year of 2019, the 70th anniversar­y of the founding of the People’ s Republic of China would be celebrated, he said. The CPC will continue efforts to accomplish all the tasks laid down in the 13th FiveYear Plan (2016-20), develop new blueprints for China’s future and see the flourishin­g of all the endeavours, he said.

He underlined the resolve to continue to follow China’s developmen­t and progress and find out more about China and report on it.

“We do not need lavish praise from others; however, we do welcome objective reporting and constructi­ve suggestion­s, for this is our motto: ‘Not angling for compliment­s, I would be content that my integrity fills the universe’.”

The CPC’s Two Centenary Goals are not only significan­t for China’s rejuvenati­on but also for the world to achieve common developmen­t, analysts said.

Gaurav Sharma, a correspond­ent of IANS, India’s largest independen­t news service, said the CPC’s new leadership is determined to fulfil China’s rejuvenati­on through diligent work.

“I am sure it will be a good leadership,” he said after attending the news conference.

Mr Xi’s proposal of building a community of shared future for mankind means inclusive developmen­t that is meaningful for the whole world, he said.

Jin Yong, deputy head of the School of Internatio­nal Studies at the Communicat­ion University of China, said Mr Xi’s speech to reporters demonstrat­ed his strategic vision as the leader of a major country.

After the First Plenary Session of the 19th CPC Central Committee, Mr Xi presented the Party’s new leadership to reporters and set out a roadmap for the next five years.

He introduced the other members of the newly-elected Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the 19th CPC Central Committee: Li Keqiang, Li Zhanshu, Wang Yang, Wang Huning, Zhao Leji and Han Zheng.

The plenum also elected 25 members, including the seven on the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee. Fifteen of them are new faces to the Political Bureau.

“I was re- elected general secretary of the CPC Central Committee,” a confident Mr Xi said against the backdrop in the Great Hall of the People of a giant Chinese landscape painting featuring the Great Wall. The Party must remain committed to a people-centred philosophy of developmen­t and make steady progress toward enhancing people’s sense of fulfilment and realising common prosperity for everyone, he said.

“For a party that fights for the eternal well- being of the Chinese nation, the centenary only ushers in the prime of life. The CPC is the world’s largest political party, and it must behave in a way commensura­te with this status.”

Mr Xi said China will work with other countries to build a global community with a shared future and make new and greater contributi­ons to peace and developmen­t for all humanity.

More than 450 major political parties in more than 160 countries sent more than 850 messages of congratula­tion to the CPC on the congress.
