Asia Cup: India women beat Kazakhstan, in semi-finals

KAKAMIGAHA­RA: Drag-flicker Gurjit Kaur notched up a hattrick as India hammered Kazakhstan 7-1 to enter the semi- final of the women’s Asia Cup. Gurjit was in sublime form as she pumped in three goals (4th, 42nd and 56th minute), while Navneet Kaur scored twice (22nd and 27th minute) and Deep Grace converted two penalty corners (16th and 41st minute) to ensure India remained unbeaten in the tournament. Vera Dom ash ne va gave Kazakhstan a 1-0 lead in the second minute but India made am ends with a tactical maneuver in the circle that won them a penalty corner in the fourth minute. Gurjit scored past Kazakhstan goalkeeper Guzal Bakhavaddi­n to equalise and after that there was no looking back for India.

MARY KOM ADVANCES

HO CHIMINH CITY: Five-time world champion MC Mary Kom and debutant Shiksha advanced to the quarter-finals of the Asian women’ s Boxing Championsh­ips here. Mary Kom defeated local favourite Diem Thi Trinh Kieu in a split verdict in the opening round of the light fly weight (48 kg) category. Also entering the quarters was Shiksha(54kg) after she defeated Mon go lia’s Oyu n-Erdene Nergui in her opening bout. She will square off against Ferangiz Koshimova, who got a first-round bye.

The distance in the elite men group is 45 km, while its 27 km for the women’ s section. In the amateur the distance for both men and women’ s event will be 27km.
