SANGRUR: A private school bus driver, Chamkaur Singh, a resident of Mubarakpur Choongan village, has filed a complaint with the deputy superintendent of police (DSP), Malerkotla, alleging that he was threatened of ‘dire consequences’ by Harpreet Singh alias Happy, arrested in the case of murder of 50-year-old Harkirat Singh, husband of Akali sarpanch Manpreet Kaur, in the presence of the cops taking him to Malerkotla for a court hearing on November 17.

He said on the day of the incident, 4-5 cops stopped his bus near the truck union office when he was driving the bus to a petrol pump on the Nabha road. The policemen boarded the bus along with Happy and two other people.

“Happy is also a resident of my village. As he boarded the bus, he recognised me because I was a witness in an old case in which he had attacked Harkirat. He attacked me in the presence of cops threatening me of dire consequences. However, the cops, accompanying him, saved me,” he has written in his complaint.

The residents of the village have also appeared before the DSP in favour of the driver and demanded action against the accused. “Happy is facing two murder cases and other criminal charges. It is strange that police were seeking a ‘lift’ on the road to bring such a dreaded criminal to the court. He is a criminal and can attack his opponents anywhere,” Manjit Singh, former sarpanch of Mubarakpur Choongan told HT.

“I have received the complaint and the police are investigating the matter” said DSP Yogi Raj.
