YAMUNANAGAR: Tension continued for the second consecutive day in Arainyawala village of Yamunanagar as villagers pelted stones at the police while protesting against the death of a youth, in an alleged clash between police and men involved in illegal mining at Lal Topi Ghat near Hathnikund Barrage on Saturday.

Police had to use tear-gas and water cannons to control the crowd on Sunday as protesters refused to cremate the body and tried to block the highway.

The protesters also allegedly hurled stones at the police team.

Police had to fire in the air to disperse the protesters.

Three district administration officials received minor injuries during stone-pelting.

The villagers agreed to end the protest and cremate the body in the evening, after receiving assurance of a high-level probe into the case.

Talking to Hindustan Times, Yamunanagar superintendent of police Rajesh Kalia said, “The situation is under control and family members have cremated the body. Police had to use mild force to stop the protesters from blocking the highway on Sunday.”

The SP said a case has been registered under Section 148 (rioting, armed with deadly weapon), 149 (unlawful assembly), 186 (obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions), 307 (attempt to murder), 353 (Assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), 427 (mischief causing damage to the amount of fifty rupees) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Arms Act against 150 people, in which 21 people have been booked by name.
