Gurpreet suspended for ‘violent conduct’
NEW DELHI: India’s number one and Bengaluru FC goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu has been handed a two-match suspension and a fine of ~3 lakh by the Indian Super League for his ‘violent conduct’ during his side’s away match against FC Goa last week.
Gurpreet had a clash with Manuel Lanzarote Bruno, whom he shoved on the head from behind after the FC Goa player pushed him. The referee gave Gurpreet the marching orders while also awarding a penalty to FC Goa in the first half. Bengaluru FC lost the match 3-4 at Margao on November 30.
“Bengaluru FC player Gurpreet Singh Sandhu has been handed a two-match suspension and fine of ~3 lakhs with immediate effect for the Hero Indian Super League 2017-18 season,” the ISL said in a statement.
“AIFF Disciplinary Committee announced the decision on the breach of Disciplinary Code Article 49 (misconduct against opponents or person other than match officials), based on the Referee’s report of violent conduct by Gurpreet ...” the statement added.

GUWAHATI: India walloped Nepal 3-0 to win the first South Asian Regional Badminton Tournament (team) on Tuesday. Aryaman Tandon beat Dipesh Dhami 21-9, 21-15 in boys singles. Ashmita Chaliha then defeated Rashila Maharjan 21-9, 21-6 in girls’ singles before the Indian pair of Arintap Dasgupta and Krishna Prasad defeated Dipesh Dhami and Nabin Shrestha 19-21, 21-14, 21-11 to seal the deal.
OLYMPIC CHAMPION BEKELE TO LEAD 25K RUN
KOLKATA: Three-time Olympic gold-medallist Kenenisa Bekele will be the star attraction in the Kolkata 25K run on Dec 17. The runner will, for the first time, compete in 25K. The Ethiopian great’s best 25K effort is 1:12:47, an intermediate time en route winning the Berlin Marathon 2016.

KINGSTON: Multiple Olympic and world champion Usain Bolt has described the unveiling of his statue in front of Kingston’s National Stadium as one of the greatest moments of his career. The statue, commissioned by the Jamaican government, stands in front of the place where 15 years ago Bolt won the junior championships to announce himself to the world. “For me this is up there...this is one of the greatest moments in my career,” Bolt said.
