SITUATION IN KASHMIR IMPROVING: CRPF SPECIAL DG

- HT Correspondent letterschd@hindustantimes.com ■

JAMMU: THE Special director general (DG) of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) SN Shrivastava on Tuesday said that the situation across Kashmir was improving and attributed the positive development to the people, who he claimed, have started discarding terrorism.

Talking to media persons after detailing about soccer tourneys being organised by the CRPF in Jammu, Reasi, Ramban, Udhampur, Doda and Kishtwar districts, he said that he won’t be able to give figures of the militants and terror incidents as they keep on fluctuating but wherever needed, security forces took strong action and contained militancy.

“Incidents of stone-pelting have also decreased considerably and the law and order situation has improved. What is required is that we engage the youth of Kashmir in a positive manner to deal with them,” he said and added that efforts towards that end have already been initiated.

On ‘Operation all out’, the DG said it had yielded positive dividends but added that what was especially praise-worthy was the fact that people themselves have started discarding militancy.

“Several parents appealed to their sons to come back to the mainstream. All of us must have heard about one such youth, Majid Khan, who had picked up the gun but returned to the mainstream on an appeal by her mother. We welcome and appreciate it,” he said. Security forces in Kashmir have eliminated over 200 terrorists this year so far.
