Subways not a safe bet for city women

Women commuters, who return late from work, said that the subways are best avoided as they are dark and poorly maintained. They said there are frequent incidents of women commuters being harassed while passing through subways, but they go unreported

Feb 15: An assistant professor in a Delhi college was allegedly molested by an auto-rickshaw driver when she was travelling from Huda City Centre to her residence in Sector 51. The victim, from Meghalaya, filed a complaint at the women’s police station in Sector 51 saying that the auto driver drove her to a secluded place and molested her

May 29: Three persons allegedly raped a woman in a moving car after throwing off her nine-month-old daughter. The 23-year-old victim said she was going to her parents’ house in Khandsa village around midnight on May 29 after an argument with her husband.

June 16: A 37-year-old fashion designer, working in Delhi’s Patel Nagar area, was allegedly molested at Gurgaon’s Iffco Chowk Metro station on June 16. The station is one of the busiest and most-frequented public spaces in the city. Police said she got off at the Iffco Chowk Metro station around 11pm and was walking towards the exit when a man touched her inappropri­ately from behind.

June 21: Two women were allegedly molested on MG Road while they were walking down after buying liquor from a vend near Sahara Mall. They said the men followed them and groped them while they were about to board an

auto-rickshaw. A case was registered at Sonipat police station.

June 27: The Gurgaon police arrested a 38-year-old bus driver for allegedly molesting and attacking a 26-year-old nurse. The victim had boarded seat near the driver. The victim alleged that the driver passed lewd comments at her and threatened her when she resisted his advances.

August 9: A driver working with cab aggregator Uber was arrested for allegedly abusing a 27-year-old employee of a multinatio­nal bank over phone. The employee claimed that the driver abused her after she twice cancelled the ride after his behaviour raised suspicion.
