YAMUNANAGAR: A mentally-challenged woman was allegedly raped by a cop in Yamunanagar on Wednesday night.

The incident came to light when another patient’s attendant raised the issue with hospital officials, alleging that she had seen a man in police uniform on the victim’s bed at midnight.

The hospital authorities then informed police after which an FIR was registered.

The cop, however, has not yet been identified yet but the police have registered a case against an unidentified person under Section 376 (rape) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and started investigation.

The incident has exposed serious loopholes in the security system of the hospital, where

thousands of female patients visit every day for treatment, as CCTV cameras of the hospital were also found to be defunct.

Talking to Hindustan Times, Yamunanagar chief medical officer Dr Kuldeep Singh said, “We have informed the police and a four-member medical board has been formed to conduct the medical of the victim to ascertain the allegations.”

“The victim, however, is unable to recount the incident. Moreover, no injury marks were found on her body. But we will know the details only after the medical board submits its report, which is expected in another four or five days,” he added.

When asked why the CCTV cameras installed in the hospital were not working he said, “The CCTV cameras were shut due to the ongoing maintenance works.”

When contacted, women police station in-charge Kulbir Kaur said, “As per the complaint by the hospital authority, we have registered a case against unknown policeman under Section 376 of the IPC but the statement of the victim could not be recorded as the doctors said that she was unable to give her statement.”

Police sources said that they were also recording the statements of policemen, who were on duty at the hospital.
