Saina helps Warriors win

NEWDELHI:WORLD No 10 Saina Nehwal made a stunning comeback after going down in the opening game to beat reigning CWG champion Michelle Li of Canada and helped Awadhe Warriors take an unassailab­le 4-0 lead over North Eastern Warriors in the Premier Badminton League Season 3 here on Saturday.

The match not only saw Awadhe take a 3-0 advantage in the five-match duel, but also attain 4-0 lead on points to seal the deal for her team with two matches still to go.

Saina, playing in her first match this Season slumped to a surprising 15-6 loss against World No 21 Michelle in the first game and gave the North-eastern Warriors a ray of hope. She eventually won 6-15, 15-13, 15-13.

Parupalli Kashyap accounted for North Eastern Warriors’ skipper Ajay Jayaram, winning 15-9, 15-11 to make it 2-0 for the team after Awadhe Warriors started the match by winning the mixed doubles.

KAPUR TWO BEHIND LEADER, STAYS IN HUNT

PATTAYA : Shiv Kapur turned in a three-under 68 to hung in right behind the leader Prom Meesawat and stay in the hunt for his third title of the season at the USD 500,000 Royal Cup on Saturday.

Kapur aggregated 10-under 203 to stay two shots adrift of Prom (66), who moved all alone into the lead at 12-under 201. In the distant third place was Gaganjeet Bhullar (69) alongside Poom Saksansin (68) at six-under 207. Khalin Joshi (71) was Tied-ninth at 4-under, while Jyoti Randhawa (72) was T-38.

WRESTLERS SAKSHI, BABITA IN CWG TEAM

LUCKNOW: Olympic bronze medallist Sakshi Malik was today named in the Indian women’s wrestling team for next year’s Commonweal­th Games in Gold Coast, Australia after a selection trail held here.

Apart from Sakshi (62kg), other women grapplers who booked their berths for the 2018 Commonweal­th Games are Vinesh Phogat (50kg), Babita Kumari (54kg), Pooja Dhanda (57kg), Divya Karan (68 kg) and Kiran (76kg). They will also represent the country in the 2018 Senior Asian Wrestling Championsh­ip in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.

BOXING NATIONALS TO BE CWG TRIALS

NEWDELHI: Next month’s women’s National Boxing Championsh­ips will double up as selection trials for camp probables for the Commonweal­th and Asian Games, a move that is likely to ensure top pugilists’ participat­ion in the marquee domestic event.

The tournament will be held from January 6 to 12 in Rohtak.
