If you think streets are meant for humans to walk on, think again.

In Malave Di Kothi, a thickly-populated locality in Batala, drains, sewerage lines and streets are indistinguishable from each other. Thanks to the nonchalant attitude of the authorities concerned, the sewerage system is choked and the dirty water spills over from the drains and floods the streets. At many places, water has even entered houses.

Recently, six people from this locality were hospitalised after their potable water supply got contaminated with the sewerage water. Doctors warned that if the unhygienic condition in the area continues, occurrence of a major health hazard cannot not be ruled out.

OBSOLETE WATER SUPPLY, SEWER LINES

Speaking to HT, Banarsi Lal, 50, a local resident, said, “The sewerage water has entered our houses and the health of our children is at stake. The sewer and water pipeline in our area have become obsolete.”he added that, on many occasions, residents have complained about the problem to Naresh Mahajan, president of the municipal council, but no action has been taken.

When asked about the problems faced by people, executive engineer, sewerage board, SS Dhillon said, “The municipal council added some unauthorised drains into the main sewerage pipeline. This choked the entire sewer. Jet pump machines are working and soon the problem will be solved.”
