It’s time to reflect on what you have

As the New Year begins, one is forced to reminisce on what is and what could have been. I wonder though what power a date on a calendar can have on the thought process. Why even wait for another year to start to usher in a change in the form of a New Year resolution?

As I embark on the golden years, I am still battling with my hard to shed “middle class emotions”. I’m sentimental about material things bought eons ago even if they lie unused. And people dump relationships sensing lack of convenience. There is no question of these being edged out, as mere presence gives me much more happiness than probably an item of value would ever do. How much of us is wasted on foolish sentimentality. No more mush, I firmly tell myself. One must learn to be a little clinical, de-junk and move ahead. I begin with my mind. A lot of files have overrun their shelf-life. Allow cold silence to overtake communication and in no time, you are left to deal with residual bitterness. So clear off the cobwebs, before it’s too late. We are all forever adjusting the baggage on our backs. A lot of us are made to tow the excess baggage of our co-travellers too.

A little perspective change makes the load lighter. Just as a menu combination was created by experts, subject combination was invented, a baggage combination too seems to be created. Look closely, you will find your blessings neatly packed in, besides your liabilities. Not everyone can boast of good health, good memory, a family and a little love and laughter thrown in. Some may have pots of money but no one to share it with. Some others might have to pop in half a dozen pills just to keep the soul connected to the body, on a daily basis.

A few missing pages can seldom render a book useless. It can be treated as an opportunity to write afresh, in one’s own hand and fill the missing link. Over the years, one learns to adapt to a lot of unprecedented ‘dole’. Does it really matter, what came your way, as long as you didn’t allow it to make a dent in your happiness? If you allow, even a storm to pass you by, you have done your existence a great favour. For probably, this is what is expected of a human being. To understand the transience of life and the situations it brings. We model ourselves for smooth roads and easy camaraderie with fellow beings. Learnt it now, that if your ego can’t take a knock or two, you have probably not fed it right.

Happiness created is far richer than happiness that comes readymade.

If something like that exists, that is. Reminds me of a lady who fell off her wheel chair at the airport, struggling on her arms to get back.

A lot of people rushed forward to help her. She smilingly waved them off, saying, “Oh but I have beautiful strong arms to prop me up. Why worry?” That is the attitude, methinks. Look at what is, and you won’t ever notice, what is not.

All sorted out for the New Year.
