NEW DELHI: Delhi boys and West Bengal girls grabbed the volleyball gold medals in their respective sections in the Khelo India School Games on Monday.

While the boys’ finals went the full distance, West Bengal beat Maharashtra in straight games.

Delhi beat UP in the Boys final 3-2 and Bengal girls beat Maharashtra 3-0, while Kerala beat Uttarakhand for boys’ bronze and Gujarat beat UP for girls’ bronze.

Earlier the bronze medal match saw a two-hour struggle between Kerala and Uttarakhand before Kerala nervously got past Uttarakhand 3-2 to claim the bronze.

In the girls’ final, West Bengal continued their winning spree at the IG Indoor Stadium. The West Bengal girls, who had won the National School Games at Andhra Pradesh last October, once again beat the same opponents Maharashtra. Earlier the Gujarat girls claimed the Bronze with a 3-1 victory over UP. The Gujarat girls came back strongly after losing the first set to win the next 3 and claim the bronze.

BHAKER, A VERSATILE CHAMP

NEWDELHI: Catch ‘em young is the motto of Khelo India School Games, but versatility is also vital before young athletes decide which event they will look to further their careers on.

The 16-year-old Haryana shooter, Manu Bhaker, who broke the junior national mark twice while winning the girls’ 10m air pistol to go with the senior national title she won in December, picked her sport after learning to enjoy sport. Manu won a bronze at national level in Manipuri martial art, Thang Ta. She was a state-level skating champion and played tennis and swimming too besides regularly winning medals in athletics at school meets.
