JALANDHAR: After a number of protests and a chain hunger strike by the primary teachers, who had not been paid salary for the past three months, the district education officer (elementary) has finally managed to get the salary budget from the state education department and disbursed onemonth salary to teachers on Friday. However, two months’ salary is still pending.

Around 2,300 teachers had not been getting salary since November because of a clerical mistake made by the district primary education officials, who had mistakenly demanded ₹60 lakh salary budget against the pending grant of ₹60 crore for the year.

Ganesh Bhagat, general secretary of the Government Teachers Union, Punjab, said they have received one-month salary but demanded early release of the pending salary for two more months. “we will lift our strike on Monday only if the DEO assures us that pending salary dues will be released in 10 days,” he said.
