ROHTAK: A three-year-old Dalit girl was allegedly raped by a man living in her neighbourhood in a colony in the old city area in Rohtak on Sunday evening. The incident took place when the victim was playing outside her house with her friends.

Police said the accused allegedly lured the victim on some pretext and took her to one corner of the street, where he raped her.

A friend of the victim saw her crying on the road. He informed her mother, who brought her home. The mother said when she asked her daughter why she was crying, she pointed towards the house of a neighbouring man but could not tell what had happened.

The mother, however, said she noticed her daughter’s private parts heavily bleeding. She then immediately called the police control room and informed the matter to cops. “I initially suspected she was beaten by someone. But I could not find any injury mark on her body. Only her private parts were heavily bleeding,” the mother said.

The police said the victim was taken to Civil Hospital for medical treatment. She was discharged after a few hours and is said to be stable. A suspect who lived on rent in the neighborhood was rounded up on Sunday night, though an official arrest was yet to be made. He is the same man towards whose house the victim had gestured.

A case under Section 6 of the Prevention of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act was registered at Old Sabzi Mandi police station.

Inspector Sunita of the women police station said the three teams of police immediately started working on the case and took care of the victim and detained the accused within hours of the incident of crime. The police said the accused could have been drunk. His medical examination report was awaited.

Haryana had recently earned the dubious title of one of the worst states in terms of women’s safety when a series of rapes were reported from the state.
