PATIALA: A 52-year-old ex-serviceman was stabbed to death while his wife was critically injured in an attack by alleged robbers at their residence in Samana’s Ghazipur village in the district late Sunday.

The deceased has been identified as Darshan Singh, who retired as a subedar from the Indian army.

The incident took place around 11:30pm when two persons with their faces covered barged into their house when the family was sleeping.

Investigating officer Harsandeep Singh Gill said after Darshan noticed the two robbers scaling the outer wall of the house, he went to the verandah and confronted them.

“The robbers attacked Darshan with sharp-edged weapons. One of the assailants stabbed Darshan in his stomach with a knife while his accomplice hit on his head with an axe,” the investigating officer said further.

On hearing Darshan’s screams, his wife Gurmeet Kaur (50), rushed outside but was overpowered by the two men and was robbed of her gold ornaments after they hit her on the head, he said.

“The robbers also held the couple’s daughter-in-law Ramandeep Kaur (30) hostage. They then ransacked the house, especially the almirahs, and took away all cash and jewellery,” police said.

Two of Darshan’s sons are also in the army and are away at the places of their postings.

Superintendent of police (SP) Harwinder Singh Virk said prima facie it seemed to be a case of robbery only.

The accused most probably had carried out a recce of the house as Ramandeep had seen some persons moving around on Saturday and Sunday, she said.

A team of forensic experts and a dog squad were rushed to the crime spot to collect evidences. Deputy inspector general (DIG) Sukhchain Singh Gill and SSP S Boopathi visited the village to take stock of the investigation.
