PUNJAB GOVT SHOULD OFFER ME DSP’S JOB: NAVJOT KAUR
AMRITSAR : Navjot Kaur, who became the first Indian woman wrestler to clinch gold in the Senior Asian Wrestling Championship, on Monday said the Punjab government should appoint her as a deputy superintendent of police (DSP) in the state police force keeping in mind her achievement.
The championship was held in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. “The state government should appoint me as a DSP like it did in the case of cricketer Harmanpreet Kaur,” said Navjot soon after landing at the Amritsar airport where she was given a warm welcome by her family and people of her native village Bagadia in Tarn Tarn district.
Harmanpreet is the captain of Indian women’s Twenty20 cricket team which recently won the World Cup (Women).
However, no representative of the government or administration was at the airport to receive her. Then she went to pay obeisance at the Golden Temple. The SGPC honoured her with a siropa (robe of honour) and announced to give her ₹1 lakh.
While interacting with the media, the 27-year-old, who won gold in the 65-kg freestyle category, said, “I hope my demand will be met with by the government. I have been jobless many times. Finally, the Indian Railways had offered me a job”.
Navjot, however, was welcomed later in Tarn Taran by senior officials.
SAD BACKS DEMAND
CHANDIGARH: The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) chief Sukhbir Badal on Monday said Navjot should be given DSP’S job. He said the 28-year-old had risen above all difficulties to record a convincing victory.
CM TO HONOUR
Punjab CM on Monday congratulated Navjot Kaur for her superb performance and announced to formally felicitate her later this week. A chief minister’s office spokesperson said Navjot was given a warm welcome in her village on Amarinder’s direction. “It is a matter of pride that Navjot has become the first woman in the country to bag gold in the championship,” he said.
