SHIMLA: Himachal Pradesh chief minister Jai Ram Thakur has accused the Congress of resorting to wasteful expenditure during the previous regime.

“Several institutions were opened in violation of norms. In the last six month of its tenure, the Congress government opened institutions without approval of the finance department,” Thakur said during his reply to the debate on budget on Friday.

“65 primary schools were upgraded to middle, 100 to high schools, 105 to senior secondary schools and 16 new colleges were announced without concurrence. The government will review such decisions,” he added. The CM alleged, “The Congress government used government-run Himachal road transport corporation (HRTC) buses to ferry people to Rahul Gandhi’s October 7 rally. “It did not even pay freight worth ₹75 lakh,” he claimed.

Amidst speaker Rajiv Bindal and CM trying to pacify the opposition, Congress staged a walk- out. Virbhadra Singh, while addressing media outside the assembly, said, “Jai Ram was not replying to issues highlighted by the opposition members.”

HP MULLS STRINGENT ANTI-RAPE LAW

A day after the Haryana assembly passed a bill which provides for death penalty to those found guilty of raping girls aged 12 years or less, HP is contemplating to replicating it in the state.

“The state is considering steps to make laws more stringent. Though the existing law is strict, but we are working on to make it more stringent,” chief minister Jai Ram Thakur said on Friday.
