JAMMU : The protest of the hostel students of Jammu University turned violent after one of the students entered into a scuffle with the dean student welfare (DSW) Satnam Kour.

Since Thursday morning, the hostel students had locked all the four gates of the university and did not allow anyone to enter or leave the campus. Even the families of the faculty and other staff members were not allowed to move out of the campus.

The students were protesting to push for their demands of a new hostel facility, round-theclock mess, installation of CCTVS, Wi-fi facility among others.

One of the protesting student Abhinandan said, “Despite a new hotel building has come up, the authorities are not giving us the possession. The mess only opens for a few hours in the entire day. There have been many thefts since last year but authorities fail to install CCTV cameras on the campus.”

The matter escalated as the DSW Satnam Kour, along with security staff of the varsity, was unlocking one the gates, a protesting student Satvinder Singh parked his vehicle in front of the gate to create an obstruction.

When Satvinder did not move the vehicle despite repeated requests, the DSW lobbed a couple of blows with a stick she was carrying on him to force him to retreat. The students then hurled abuses at Kour and later, went on a rampage as they smashed the glass panes and furniture of the DSW office in the campus.
