2 held for snatching purse from woman

AMRITSAR: The police claimed to have solved a famous snatching case with the arrest of two men on Sunday.

The accused, identified as Mukesh Kumar alias Kaka and Pardeep Singh alias Sonu of New Canal Colony in Amritsar, had dragged the victim and her child for some distance before they fled with her purse. The CCTV footage of the incident had gone viral on social media.

Addressing press conference at Police Line, deputy commission­er of police (DCP) Amrik Singh said, “The accused had snatched purse of Garima Mehra, a resident of Green Avenue, in January. The victim had sustained serious injuries in the incident.” The DCP added that a motorcycle and 850 intoxicati­ng medicines were also recovered from the accused.

The snatching was witnessed in the posh Green Avenue local- ity where Union finance minister Arun Jaitley has a house.

The DCP said sub-inspector at the local unit of the anti-narcotic cell, Palwinder Singh had laid a checkpoint at the T-point near Ranjit Avenue, following which the accused were nabbed.

“During interrogat­ion, the accused told police that they had snatched Mehra’s purse.”

He said a case under Sections 379 B (snatching) was already registered against the accused while a fresh case under Sections 22-61-85 of the NDPS Act was registered on Sunday.
