Man shot dead in Rohtak gang war
He is the fifth brother to be gunned down in the rivalry that began in 2002, reportedly over a petty issue
ROHTAK : A 35-year-old man was gunned down by unidentified persons in Rohtak’s Karor village on Friday evening, once again reviving the decade-old gang war in this infamous village that had forced over 30 families to leave their homes.
The incident occurred hours after new SP Jashandeep Singh Randhawa took charge in the district and promised crackdown on criminals.
The deceased, Anand Singh, was the youngest among the seven brothers, four of whom had previously been shot dead in a gang rivalry that begun in 2002, reportedly over a petty issue. One more brother had died of illness, leaving just one brother alive in the family.
Anand’s wife Mukesh said they were going to their fields in a car when a vehicle hit them from the rear.
“Soon after, another vehicle rammed into our car from the front and some men with their faces covered opened fire on us,” she said, adding, “I buckled under while my husband got out and ran towards our fields while carrying his licenced pistol. Around 10 men followed him.”
“I heard noise of several gunshots. Once it got over, I stepped out and found my husband lying dead,” Mukesh said.
The police said 10 bullets were pumped into Anand’s body, thus killing him on spot.
They are suspecting the case to be of gang war and have booked 20 members of the rival gang. The accused include Chippi and Sombir, sons of Ram Niwas, who was allegedly killed by Anand’s eldest brother Shri Bhagwan.
As per police, Chippi was currently lodged in jail, though investigation was on to find out if he plotted the killings from inside the prison.
Villagers said Anand was the 18th victim of the gang war that had ensued between the families of Shri Bhagwan and Ram Niwas after a dispute in 2002.
The gang war had hit headlines in 2012 when Shri Bhagwan and his brother Dilbagh were shot dead in police custody, allegedly by the Chippi gang.
The police said these seven brothers had over two dozen cases of murder, extortion and dacoity registered against them. Mukesh said Anand had come out jail around a year-and-a-half ago.
