SANGRUR: ALLEGING police inaction in the murder case of a businessman, who was looted and shot at by unidentified persons earlier this month, over hundred traders and residents of Lehragaga, around 50km from Sangrur, held a march and blocked the Sunamjakhal road on Sunday.

The victim, Ashok Kumar, of Lehragaga, who owned a brick kiln in Kauhrian village, succumbed to his bullet injuries on Saturday.

The protesters accused police of ‘failing’ to nab the accused even after 24 days and raised slogans against the Punjab Police, while demanding swift action in the case.

“When Ashok was returning home on the evening of April 5, two unidentified men stopped his car and robbed him of ₹2.5 lakh cash. When he showed resistance, they opened fire on him and fled with his car,” said Harwinder Singh Sekhon, district president of brick kiln association.

Though police managed to pacify the protesters after two hours by assuring them of immediate action, the latter said they will

intensify their protests if the accused were not arrested within a week.

“Police failed to act against the accused. The state government should intervene and deliver justice as soon as possible,” said Deepak Garg, a protester.

Meanwhile, police said investigation was on and the case would be cracked soon.

“We have assured them that accused will be behind bars soon,” said Ajay Pal, deputy superintendent of police (DSP), Moonak.

Dirba station house officer Pushpinder Singh said the police have added IPC Section 302 (murder) in the first information report (FIR) in addition to the previous charges, including attempt to murder, against the accused.
