AMRITSAR : The Gate Hakima police of the district on Sunday booked some unidentified people for allegedly throwing mobile phones, cigarettes, illicit liquor bottles and tobacco inside the premises of the central jail here.

However, the recovery by the jail authorities has once again exposed chinks in the security of the jail.

Two complaints have been registered in this regard. In the first complaint, assistant superintendent (AS) of the jail, Avtar Singh, said he had recovered 2 plastic bottles (each of 300 ML) of illicit liquor inside the premises of the jail.

In the other complaint, assistant superintendent Balwinder Singh, said he had

recovered four mobile phones, 31 packets of cigarettes and one packet of tobacco near the boundary wall of the jail.

Balwinder Singh said, “Though a police van has been deployed outside the jail to keep an eye on miscreants, but some of them, somehow, managed to throw mobile phones and cigarettes inside the jail.”

On the complaint of the jail authorities, the police have registered two different cases under sections 42, 52-A of the Prison Act and 61-1-14 of the Excise Act. Investigation officers assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Kuldip Singh said investigation was on to find out the accused who managed to throw the contraband inside the jail.

This is, however, not the first time when mobile phones, cigarettes and other things have been recovered from the jail premises.

On April 20, the jail authorities had recovered 1,790 bundles of cigarettes, 32 packets of tobacco and two mobile phones during a search operation.

On March 28, the jail authorities had recovered 11 packets of cigarettes, six cell phones, a mobile charger and headphones during a search operation.
