DIPRAVA LAKRA, deputy commissioner
BATHINDA: A delegation of students from Central University of Punjab (CUP) here on Tuesday submitted a memorandum to the deputy commissioner, Diprava Lakra, demanding a judicial probe into the death of a student who had collapsed while playing basketball last Monday.
The students also demanded registration of case against “those responsible for delay” in taking Sushant Sagar, a 22-yearold MSC student who was a native of Bihar, to a private hospital after the collapsed.
They alleged that the death occurred due to negligence by the university administration as the campus dispensary lacks in facilities.
Further, the students alleged that those who are raising a voice over the issue are being threatened and pressured. They said the administration might have them harmed physically as well as academically. The university administration has already set up a six-member committee which includes officials from the district administration to inquire into the alleged delay and lack of basic facilities which will submit report by next Wednesday.
The students in the delegation, however, said they don’t expect a fair probe from the panel.
They also demanded to name the basketball court where Sushant collapsed after him and initiate a scholarship of Rs 5,000 per year to topper of his department. The students had blocked the Bathinda-mansa road on Tuesday last week over the issues.lakra said he assured students that a “proper” probe is being conducted. CUP vice-chancellor RK Kohli couldn’t be contacted despite attempts.
