Gurdaspur girl is topper in sports category

GURDASPUR: Shriya of Bal Vidya Mandir High School, Nangal Kotli, Gurdaspur, emerged as the state topper in the sports quota of Class 10 of the Punjab State Education Board (PSEB), the results of which were declared on Tuesday. Shriya scored 641 (98.62) out of 650 marks.

Interestin­gly, another girl from the same school, Dolly, secured the second position in the sports quota. Dolly scored 635 marks. Both Shriya and Dolly are players of sqay martial art. Dolly bagged the silver medal while Shriya got the bronze in the state-level competitio­n of sqay martial art organised by PSEB this year.

“I still can’t believe that I topped the sports quota. I just expected good marks in the examinatio­n,” Shriya said.

Her father Naresh Kumar is a small cloth merchant and her mother Sulekha Mahajan, a homemaker.

Shriya wants to become a college lecturer. Dolly, whose father Rakesh Kumar is dealer in pulses and mother a teacher, wants to become a doctor. Shriya and Dolly said they never took any tuition and entirely depended on the studies done in the school.

School principal Ritu Mahajan said, “My school is a temple of God for me and my students are my sons and daughters.”
