Nakodar again: Man clubbed to death, 5th murder in 5 days

The deceased, Gurpal Singh, was beaten by sticks by four members of a family of Nurmahal over a land dispute, no arrest has been made so far

JALANDHAR: A 50-year-old man was bludgeoned to death in Nurmahal late on Tuesday, making it the fifth murder reported in the past five days in Nakodar, a sub-division under Jalandhar rural police jurisdiction.

The deceased, Gurpal Singh, was beaten to death by four people of the same village over a land dispute, police said on Wednesday.

The accused, identified as Sukhdev Singh, his wife Satinder Kaur, brother Lakhwinder Singh and a relative Sucha Singh, have been booked under Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) by the Nurmahal police.

The deceased’s brother, Kulbir Singh, in his complaint said his brother was attacked with sticks by the accused family following a heated argument over a land dispute.

The first information report (FIR) states that Satinder along with his wife and other members came to the deceased’s house and entered into an argument, which later turned fatal.

“Gurpal, in a bid to save himself from the blows, tried to run away from his house, but collapsed soon after and died on the spot owing to severe head injuries inflicted by accused,” the FIR mentions.

Police said no arrest has been made in the case as accused were at large.

CRIME ON RISE

Nakodar had for the past five days been in news for two double murders that rocked the city and created panic among localites.

The police are also under fire for their failure in arresting the accused in these cases, barring one.

On Monday, a man and his 14-year-old son were found murdered at Talwandi Salem village of the subdivision. The bodies of Puran and his son Sandeep were found in mutilated condition at the house of the former’s friend Lakhvir Singh.

On Saturday, an Addi village resident, Bhinda, had allegedly killed his sister-in-law Lovepreet Kaur, 25, and her paramour Ashu, 28, after he spotted them together at their house. Bhinda is yet to be arrested.

Nakodar deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Mukesh Kumar said in the Monday’s double murder case, accused Lakhvir Singh had been arrested on murder charges. “While in the remaining two, all accused are absconding and efforts are on to nab them,” he added.

The DSP said they have increased the night patrolling in the area and cops have been directed to remain alert to avert any crime in the area.
