Horses in 5 Haryana districts infected with Glanders disease

NATIONAL RESEARCH CENTRE FOR EQUINES IN HISAR SAYS THE CONTAGIOUS DISEASE HAS BEEN DETECTED IN 50 DISTRICTS OF UP

HISAR : The National Research Centre for Equines (NRCE) in Hisar has detected occurrence of contagious disease, Glanders, among animals of the horse family, which includes mules and donkeys, in five districts of Haryana.

The scientists at the NRCE have directed the state government to send samples of horses, mules and donkeys from the affected districts of Sonepat, Panipat, Hisar, Yamunanaga­r and Faridabad to the centre for tests.

The centre has so far conducted test on samples of 385 animals and found eight of them positive.

Tripathi also stated that one horse has already been eliminated in Hisar after testing positive for Glanders.

There are a total of around 48,500 horses, mules and donkeys in the state.

UP WORST AFFECTED, FOLLOWED BY DELHI

However, the scientists claimed that Uttar Pradesh is the worst affected state in the country with as many as 50 of the 75 districts in the grip of Glanders, a serious disease.

Tests were conducted on 17,645 samples from UP and 253 of these were found infected with Glanders. The total number of animals of the horse family in UP is around 2.5 lakh.

NRCE director BN Tripathi said, “Keeping in view the situation, we have now asked

the UP and Haryana government­s to avoid holding any animal fairs.”

Delhi has reported the second highest number of animals infected with Glanders.

Out of 2,404 samples from the national capital, 51 have tested positive. There are a total 2694 animals of the horse family in Delhi.

He said the centre has also asked the Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) government to send samples of the horses, mules and ponies for tests ahead of the upcoming Amarnath Yatra.

Jammu and Kashmir has a 1.98 lakh animals of the horse family.

Tests have so far been conducted on 3,958 animals of the state and 11 of them have tested positive.

Among other states, 23 of 4,098 samples were found positive in Rajasthan, 18 of 2,736 in Maharashtr­a , 16 of 201 in Uttarakhan­d, 13 of 429 in Madhya Pradesh, 12 of 330 in Gujarat and one of 68 in Himachal Pradesh

“The NRCE will soon launch a programme for the total eradicatio­n of the disease with the help of central government,” Tripathi added.
