SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir governor NN Vohra chaired an all-party meeting on Friday and sought cooperation from the political leaders to restore normalcy in strife-torn Kashmir.
The meeting, attended by leaders of nine mainstream parties, was held at Sher-e-kashmir International Conference Centre (SKICC) and lasted for over two hours.
“The governor held wide ranging discussions on issues related to internal security, law and order, development, educational problems, the ensuing Amarnath yatra, besides the political scenario which has emerged after the imposition of governor’s rule. He sought cooperation from all the stake holders for the restoration of peace and tranquillity in the state, to enable speeding up of developmental activities,’’ said an official spokesman on the condition of anonymity.
The meeting marked the first time the governor met leaders of different parties after imposition of central rule in the state.
The spokesman said the governor urged the leaders to join hands in bringing the state out of the present morass and motivating the youth to shun the path of violence and concentrating on their education and future careers.
At the meeting, the Peoples Democratic Party was represented by party general secretary Mohammad Dilawar Mir, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) by its former state president Sat Sharma and chief spokesman Sunil Sharma. The Congress delegation was represented by its state president Ghulam Ahmad Mir. Former J&K chief minister and National Conference vice-president Omar Abdullah represented his party.
Abdullah had earlier met the governor on Wednesday soon after the state came under the governor’s rule. He had demanded dissolution of the state assembly and holding of elections.
