WASHINGTON: The Democratic National Committee (DNC), the top decision making body of the Democratic party, on Friday named Seema Nanda its chief executive officer, making her possibly the first Indian-american in recent memory to be appointed as the operational head of a major American national party.

“As CEO, Seema will manage the day-to-day operations of the organization,” the party said in a statement.

“Seema served on DNC Chair Tom Perez’s transition team, which took a fresh look at the committee’s operations following the 2016 election and put in place an infrastructure that contributed to wins in 2017 and 2018.”

Nanda takes over from Jess O’connell, who left earlier in the year. She joins the top decisionmaking team at the party, which is hoping to build a “blue wave” and win back control of the US House of Representatives and the Senate in the mide-term elections due in November.

“People are hurting all across our country,” Nanda said in statement. “I believe that Democrats are offering the positive solutions so desperately needed right now—solutions forged by the strength of our diversity, the rigor of our ideas, and the decency of our values.”

DNC chair said in a statement announcing Nanda’s appointment, “I’m beyond excited that Seema is bringing her talent and brilliance to the DNC.
