At IIM Rohtak, girl students outnumber boys for 1st time
ROHTAK: The new batch of Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Rohtak, has 123 girls as against 119 boys, a massive jump of over 350% in female intake as compared to the previous batch that had only 27 girls.
The new batch, ninth for the institute, will be inducted at the new permanent campus of IIM Rohtak that is built over 200 acres on Delhi-hisar highway in Rohtak.
The IIM had previously been functioning from Maharshi Dayanand University (MDU), Rohtak.
“The institute witnessed a big leap in the gender equality of students, with 123 students being female, which amounts to 51% of the batch of 242,” an IIM release said. “This is more than 350% rise in the number of female students as compared to the last year. This is the maximum number of girls in a particular batch in the history of IIM Rohtak,” it added.
A total of 2 lakh candidates appeared for CAT this year out of which 1.5 lakh students were interested in joining IIM Rohtak. As many as 11,000

candidates were invited for interviews and 242 were selected.
Prof Dheeraj Sharma, director, IIM Rohtak, said, “Management institutes across the country face complex challenges with respect to gender diversity. At Iim-rohtak we have actively engaged with potential applicants through our outreach programmes, management conclaves, and online interactions. These efforts have given us historic numbers in terms of diversity with increase over last year in female intake.”
The number of girl students at IIM had dropped considerably in 2016 after the violent Jat agitation that had Rohtak as its epicentre. There were just nine girls for 145 boys in the 2016-18 batch, forcing the IIM to take measures such as announcing merit scholarship to girls to balance the gender ratio.
