New Delhi: Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday wrote an open letter to the Delhiites, underlining the needs why Delhi should be given full statehood. Through the letter, he urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to fulfil his full statehood promise which, Kejriwal said, Modi had made in the run-up to 2014 general elections.

In the letter, the Aam Aadmi Party’s national convener said that if Delhi is granted full statehood every person will have a house to live, those unemployed will get jobs, every student will get admission in college, all unauthorised colonies will be regularised and the city will be free of crime.

The AAP had, on Friday, announced to start a door-to-door campaign from July 3, demanding full statehood for the National Capital.

Kejriwal said though the country got independence in 1947 and democracy was established, but Delhi was “not given full freedom”.

Kejriwal, through the open letter, also hit out at the lieutenant governor Anil Baijal.

“Lieutenant Governor’s rule was set in Delhi removing viceroy of the British Empire. People elected their government in Delhi but it is not allowed to execute the will of the people. Whichever government is chosen by the people, L-G is the only authority in Delhi. This is an insult to the people. Why are Delhi people half-citizens?” Kejriwal said in the letter.

“As soon as the government starts installing CCTV cameras across the city, L-G says he will not let it happen. Delhiites say they want mohalla clinic, L-G says he will not let the government to construct schools, people say they want ration, L-G says he won’t give ration. Delhi people say they want unauthorised colonies to be regularised but the L-G says he will not allow the government to do this,” Kejriwal’s letter said.

He also hit out at the BJP and the Congress saying that both the parties had been promising to give Delhi full statehood in their election manifestos but never fulfilled it despite forming the government at the Centre.
