An elderly woman, Kartar Kaur, 80; her daughter, Harmeet Kaur, 50, and granddaughter, Dilpreet Kaur, 24, were found murdered.

AMRITSAR : An elderly woman, Kartar Kaur, 80; her daughter, Harmeet Kaur, 50, and granddaughter, Dilpreet Kaur, 24, were found murdered under mysterious circumstances in their house at Makhowal village in Ajnala sub-division on Thursday morning.

Kartar and Harmeet were widows and lived together, said police sources, adding that Dilpreet was married to Prabh Singh of Chhichrewal village in the district, but lived with her mother. Villagers and neighbours had not seen the trio since Tuesday.

“It seems that they were strangulated to death in cold blood,” said Harpal Singh, SP, investigation, of Amritsar police (rural), after examining the crime spot.

He and Amritsar Rural SSP Parampal Singh and other officers had rushed to the spot after the news of the triple murder broke out. Forensic and technical teams had also been called to the spot.

RELATIVE ASKED NEIGHBOURS TO CHECK ON THE TRIO

Neighbours of the women say they received a call at 6am on Thursday from a relative of the women, asking them to check on them as the women had not been taking calls since Wednesday.

“We knocked at their door, but there was no response. Finally, one of us entered the house by scaling a wall, only to find that the women were dead,” said a neighbour, not wishing to be named.

He added that the bodies of Harmeet and her daughter were on the floor, while Kartar’s body was on the bed with a pillow covering her face.

SSP Rural Parampal said, “We suspect a dispute in the family as the motive for the triple murder. Initial investigation shows that Kartar Kaur had a dispute with her grandsons, Amarbir and Parneet, over land.”

Kartar had three sons. One of them, Gurdyal Singh, is in Rishikesh, working at a gurdwara. The second son, Kulwant Singh, is dead; he had not married.

The third son, Jaswinder Singh, is also dead, but his sons Amarbir and Parneet Singh live in Makhowal village itself. SHO Ramdas police station, Mantej Singh, said unidentified people had been booked under section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code.
