CHANDIGARH: Two days after Punjab Police vigilance bureau (VB) issued a lookout notice against former Moga SSP Raj Jit Singh amid reports that he may flee the country fearing action in a drug case, the officer on Monday surrendered his passport at the police headquarters here.

He was also grilled for seven hours by the VB’S economic offences wing in Patiala.

Raj Jit, who is now posted as commandant, 4th Battalion at Mohali, sent his passport to director general of police (DGP administration) through his deputy superintendent of police with a letter in which he blamed a news channel for creating rumours about him leaving the country.

In the letter, Raj Jit said he had no plans to visit abroad at this juncture when his case is pending in the Punjab and Haryana high court.

Raj Jit was required for questioning in connection with a first information report (FIR) registered at the flying squad police station of the vigilance bureau in 2015. As per the FIR, some drug smugglers had managed to get a clean chit in the chemical examination of drugs seized from them as a result of the complicity of the lab staff. It was also alleged that inspector Inderjit, then posted in Tarn Taran, called the lab staff for questioning and instead of arresting the main accused, Jagdeep Singh, made him an approver in the case after taking ₹17 lakh from him. The FIR says that Raj Jit, who was the SSP there then, was also aware of this.

In June 2017, Inderjit was caught with drugs by the special task force (STF) after which he was dismissed. Raj Jit’s name cropped up in the case during Inderjit’s questioning.

The officer was on Monday grilled by superintendent of police Prit Pal Singh of the VB’S economic offences wing for seven hours in Patiala.

“We sought Raj Jit’s property and bank details,” said a vigilance official.

“I will cooperate in the probe. I have nothing to hide. I was never summoned in the case and had no clue that the FIR was registered by name against me. I have replied to all queries of the VB,” Raj Jit told Hindustan Times.

The officer was shifted from Moga on July 2 after chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh convened a special meeting on drugs issue in which most of the ministers demanded action against the cop, who as per them, was enjoying plum postings despite controversies surrounding him.
