SRINAGAR: Two Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel were killed and two others, including a civilian, were injured when militants attacked a CRPF vehicle at Achabal in south Kashmir, seven kilometres from Anantnag town.

Officials said that CRPF personnel came under attack from vehicle borne militants. Militant outfit Lashkar-e-toiba has claimed responsibility for it.

Soon after the attack, the army and police launched a search operation in the area. However, the militants managed to escape. The security in south Kashmir was beefed up following a strike call by separatist leadership on July 13 to celebrate it as Martyrs’ Day.

Officials said militants opened fire on the CRPF personnel of 96 battalion who were on the road opening party (ROP) duty. In the attack, three CRPF personnel were seriously injured and they were shifted to a hospital where two of them succumbed to their injuries. One among them is said to be assistant sub-inspector ML Meena.

The condition of the injured civilian is stated to be stable.

Police spokesman confirmed the killing of the two CRPF personnel. “One civilian was also injured in the incident,” he said, adding that a case has been registered and investigations taken up.

A senior police officer said they have got details about the militants. “We have some clues and soon the militants will be nabbed.’’

Claiming the responsibility for the attack, Lashkar spokesman told a Srinagar based news agency that cadres of the outfit were involved in the attack on the convoy of the CRPF which was on the road opening party duty.

Since governor’s rule was imposed in J&K last month, six security force personnel have been killed in different attacks in the Valley.
