TARN TARAN : Police on Friday arrested a Punjab roadways driver and recovered 1,440 banned tablets from his possession at the Tarn Taran bus stand.

The accused has been identified as Gurwinder Singh alias Bhinder of Bhathe Bhaini village of the district. The police said Gurwinder drove a roadways bus on the Tarn Taran-new Delhi route.

Senior superintendent of police (SSP) Darshan Singh Mann said, “After receiving a tip-off on Friday, a crime investigation agency team conducted a raid as soon as the bus reached the local bus stand. Lomotil (banned drug) tablets were recovered from the bus.”

“The driver confessed to have been smuggling the pills from Delhi. Probe is on to establish the link of more people in the case,” he claimed.

A case under Sections 22, 61, 85 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS) Act has been registered against the accused at the Patti Sadar police station.

Earlier this month, the Tarn Taran police had arrested more than 50 people under the NDPS act. Most of the arrested accused were caught with medicinal pills, capsules and injections.

The SSP had linked the recent death of young men in Tarn Taran with the ‘fake heroin’ injections.

He had said that the drug peddlers are using medicinal drugs to make fake heroin that causes death immediately after being injected.
