KARNAL: A 32-year-old inmate of Karnal district jail allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself inside the prison on Saturday morning.

Karnal sadar police station in-charge Harjinder Singh said the jail authorities told the police that the inmate hanged himself in the veranda of the jail with a piece of cloth. He was identified as Navroop Singh, a resident of Sector 50 of Chandigarh.

According to the police, Navroop was brought to the jail on July 4 after a cheating case was registered against him under Sections 420, 406 and 506 of the IPC at Kunjpura police station.

The police said that the body of the deceased was sent for postmortem to the Kalpana Chawla Government Medical College and Hospital. A judicial magistrate will conduct an inquiry into the incident, they added.

When contacted, Sher Singh, superintendent of Karnal district jail, said the incident took place around 5am in the morning.

This is the second incident of suicide in Karnal jail in less than two months as a 55-year-old inmate, Avtar Singh (55), a truck driver of Gurdaspur in Punjab, had also committed suicide by hanging himself with a turban in the jail hospital on May 29.

On July 8, two inmates of the jail sustained injuries as two groups of prisoners clashed in the prison.

In November 2016, Lashkar-etaiba terrorist Syed Abdul Karim alias Tunda was also attacked by two prisoners in Karnal jail.
