Two Lashkar militants gunned down in Anantnag

SRINAGAR: Two Lashker-e-taiba terrorists were killed in an encounter with security forces in south Kashmir’s Anantnag town on Wednesday following an intelligen­ce tip off about their presence inside a house, police said. A joint team of the police, CRPF and army cordoned off a house at Mehman Mohalla, Lal Chowk of the town after a specific input about the presence of the two LET terrorists was received, they said.

SRINAGAR: Two Lashkar-e-taiba militants were killed in an encounter with security forces in south Kashmir’s Anantnag town.

Officials said, on Wednesday night, army and the special operation group of J&K police cordoned Lalchowk area of Anantnag after the police received specific inputs about the presence of two or three militants in the congested locality.

However, before the operation was launched, the police imposed strict restrictio­ns in the Anantnag and didn’t allow people to move out from their house.

In the wee hours of Wednesday, the encounter began in the areas as the police and the army zeroed in the place where militants were hiding. After six hours, two militants were killed and operation was called off. Later, restrictio­ns were also lifted.

Jammu and Kashmir director general of police SP Vaid said two Lashkar militants were killed in the operation.

Police spokesman said as the security forces advanced towards the house where militants were holed up, they opened fire on the security forces.

“In retaliatio­n, two militants were eliminated. Without any collateral damage.”

He said on the basis of the incriminat­ing materials seized from the slain militants, it was establishe­d that they belonged to Lashkar- e- Taiba.

“One of the killed militant was identified as Bilal Ahmad Dar alias Bin Yamin Dar, a resident of Sofi Mohalla in Kulgam. The identity of the other militant is yet to be ascertaine­d,” the spokespers­on said.

Police said Bilal was involved in series of terror acts in the south Kashmir.

Sources, however, said there could be a resident of Doda who had recently joined militant ranks.

On Sunday, police had killed three militants in Khudwani around 10 kilometres from the Anantnag town.

ENCOUNTER UNDERWAY IN KUPWARA

Meanwhile, army and police launched another operation on Wednesday morning near the line of control at Keran sector in Kupwara district close to the line of control. The police spokesman said the operation is still underway. The officials said it is not clear whether the militants engaged with forces are fresh infiltrato­rs or not.
