GURUGRAM: A 24-year-old man allegedly killed his wife to death over dowry, lived with her body for over 36 hours before calling the cops to surrender, the police said on Saturday.

He even slept next to the body in the same bed for two days, investigators said.

The accused, identified as Manjit strangulated his wife Sushma (23) with her ‘chunni’ on Wednesday evening at their one-room rented accommodation in Saraswati Enclave, near Sector 10, said assistant sub-inspector Joginder Hooda, the investigating officer in the case.

Divulging details of the incident, Hooda said that the couple had had a fight over unmet demands for dowry on Wednesday evening, following which the accused strangulated Sushma with her ‘chunni’.

“He lived in the same room and even slept next to the body. He did not go to work and stepped out of the house on very few occasions,” he said.

Around 6.30am on Friday, Manjit rang up the police emergency number and said that he had killed his wife and did not try to run away, the police said.

“When we reached the house (on Friday), the body had started decomposing, and there was a stench emanating from it,” Hooda said.

An FIR was registered in the Sector 10 police station under sections 304B (dowry death), 498A (husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty), 120B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code against the accused and four of his family members, after the woman’s father approached the police.

“The couple, who were married just eight months ago, lived alone in the house. The accused told the police after he called the police fearing the neighbours might become suspicious of the foul small and alert the police,” Hooda said.

Sushma’s father Jaipal (55), a resident of Palwal, said that earlier in July, Sushma had visited her family in Palwal and told them that her husband has been assaulting her over dowry.

He added that he had raised the issue with the family of the accused in Bhiwani.

“What happened to my daughter should happen to him (accused) also. He should be punished so that this would not happen to anyone else,” Jaipal said.

The police said an autopsy has been done on the body and it has been handed over to the family.
