GUMLA (JHARKHAND):A man alleged to be mentally unstable killed a woman and her two children in Jharkhand’s Gumla district, and was lynched shortly after by the enraged villagers who beat him to death, police have said.

Sudama Chaudhary, Palkot police station-in-charge, said the man, identified as Chotu Munda, had attacked Bandhain Munda and her children — three-yearold Vipin and one-year-old Divyang — with an axe Saturday afternoon. “He inflicted injuries on the victims’ neck, following which they died,” police said.

Chaudhary added that as per the preliminary investigation, villagers after hearing the cries of the victims arrived on the spot and tried to catch Chotu to hand him over to the police. However, he attacked the villagers.

Two people were seriously injured, after which the incensed people thrashed Chotu. He died soon after, police said.

Husband of Bandhain Munda, who was also injured in the attack, has been referred to RIMS, Ranchi for better treatment.

The incident occurred when Bandhain Munda was heading towards agricultural fields around 11am. Police said the bodies have been sent for post mortem and further investigations are being conducted.

Police said Chotu Munda, a resident of the same village, is not related to the victim’s family but stayed near their home.
