Man murdered for refusing ‘bidi’ in Gurugram, accused arrested

GURUGRAM : Denying a ‘bidi’ to a drunken man cost a 37-year-old father of five his life in the Bhondsi area. The man was allegedly bludgeoned to death by the accused with a metal rod, police said.

The accused, who the police said was an alcoholic, was enraged after the victim, Shyam Singh (37), refused to give him a ‘bidi’ (cheap tobacco) outside a shop in Garhi Bazidpur near Bhondsi, 20 km from Gurugram, police said on Friday.

The accused, Arvind, around 35 years of age, fled the spot and was arrested by the police on Friday evening from Bhondsi area, Gurugram Police spokespers­on Subhash Boken said.

Singh, who was working at a diary in Garhi Bazidpur, was beaten to death by the accused, an employee at a nearby automobile service station, around 11pm on Thursday, Umesh Kumar, station house officer of Bhondsi police station said.

The victim, a resident of Chawli village in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, died on the spot. His body was handed over to his family members after an autopsy on Friday evening. He is survived by his wife, two sons and three daughters.

the service station around 11pm on Thursday. Police said the accused, in a drunken state, walked up to Singh and asked him for a bidi.

“He refused to give him a bidi, leading to an altercatio­n between the two. Arvind took a metal rod and hit him on the head,” Dharampal told police.

“He (Singh) shouted for help and hearing his cries, I rushed to the spot. At this, Arvind fled the spot ,” Dharampal said.

He added that there was blood all over Singh’s head and by the time he lifted him from the ground to take him to the hospital, he was dead.

At the Civil hospital’s mortuary, Singh’s elder brother, Uday Veer (46), said that the Singh had come to the city from Agra on Sunday to work at a diary for ₹8,000 a month.

“The person responsibl­e for my brother’s death should be punished,” Veer said.

Shyam’s uncle, Attar Singh, said ,“A year ago, he closed a kirana shop he was operating from his house. After that, he did odd jobs and had even visited Gurugram thrice in a bid to find work. He briefly worked as a daily wage earner in Gurugram.”
